It’s boxing day, a day once dedicated to hunting wrens. Groups of boys would go out armed with stones, hunt the wren down, tie the dead wren on a pole and decorate it with holly. With painted faces, the boys would sing at houses in return for money or treats.

The wren, the wren, the king of all birds

On St Stephen’s Day was caught in the furze,

We hunted him far, we hunted him near

And found him under the bushes here.

Hurrah, my boys, hurrah!

Hurrah, my boys, hurrah!

Knock at the knocker and ring at the bell,

And give us a copper for singing so well.”

Thankfully we don’t hunt wrens any longer, but it seems it is a time for goodwill. Woke up this sunny Boxing Day morn to the following totally unexpected messages in my inbox:

  • Kimi is amazing. I’m on chapter 12 already. Emma C.
  • David will not put the book down. He’s spellbound. Thank you, John. David’s mum.
  • I love Kimi. She’s funny. I love your book.  Alison.
  • The crows were scary. But I love it. I’ll be finished this tonight. Jade K.

How awesomely cool is that? Thank you! Made me grin like a crow

Brilliant writing and fantastic images. The story kept me on my toes all the way through and one night, I had to read all four chapters till the end!

    Truly engaging!
